John fought in the Civil war. John and Frederika (his second wife and their two oldest children, Fred & Rose, all died within days of each other from food poisoning. The five younger children were raised by his sister Anna Katherine Lutz Maier, along with her daughter Elizabeth and one of her brother Jacob's sons, John, whom she brought over from Germany.
